Microsoft Official Curriculum Courses and Certifications in Windows Client and Server Technologies, Exchange, SQL and Virtualization
Introduction
Since the release of Windows Server 2008, Microsoft has brought out new certifications which are focused on specific roles and skills. These certifications are the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist Series - MCTS and the Microsoft Certified IT Professional Series - MCITP. The older MCSA and MCSE certifications relate only to Windows Server 2003 and earlier Microsoft products.
Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS)
The Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certifications provide the foundation for Microsoft Certification. These certifications are designed to validate your skills on the features and functionality of key technologies. You can show your depth of knowledge in one specific technology, earn multiple MCTS certifications to show breadth across different products, or build on the MCTS to earn a Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) certification. Earning an MCTS certification typically requires that you successfully pass one exam and have at least one year of relevant experience.
The MCTS certification training offered at The Training Foundry includes:
- MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Configuration (6425/6426)
- MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure Configuration (6421)
- MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure Configuration (6427/6428)
- MCTS: Windows 7 – Configuration (6292)
- MCTS: Windows Server 2008 R2, Server Virtualization (10215)
- MCTS: Windows Server 2008 R2, Desktop Virtualization (10324)
- MCTS: Exchange Server 2010, Configuring (10135)
- MCTS: Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Implementation and Maintenance (Practical SQL Business)
Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP)
Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) certification helps validate that an individual has the comprehensive set of skills necessary to perform a particular job role, such as database administrator or enterprise messaging administrator. MCITP certifications build on the technical proficiency measured in the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certifications. Therefore, you will earn one or more MCTS certifications on your way to earning an MCITP certification.
The MCITP certification training offered at The Training Foundry includes:
- MCITP: Windows 7 Enterprise Desktop Support Technician 7 (6292/6293)
- MCITP: Windows 7 Enterprise Desktop Administrator 7 (6292/6294)
- MCITP: Windows Server 2008 Server Administrator (6425/6426/6421/6430)
- MCITP: Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Administrator
- MCITP: Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtualization Administrator (10215/10324/50273)
Choosing your MCTS Courses
If you require an MCTS credential, choose the certification related to the technology you need to implement. For example, if you will be working with Active Directory, choose MCTS Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Configuration. If you need to implement Desktop Virtualization, choose the Windows Server 2008 R2 Desktop Virtualization certification.
Choosing your MCITP Courses
When considering which MCITP certification to obtain, consider the job role you wish to be certified for. On the Windows Client side (Windows 7), Microsoft offers the MCITP Enterprise Desktop Support Technician (EDST) and the MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Administrator 7 (EDA). The primary difference is that the EDST is focused on reacting to customer issues as a helpdesk or technical support responder, but the EDA role is focused on proactive desktop tasks that include designing, deploying, and managing desktops. The EDA role is part of a design team that is looking into the future to determine what the desktop infrastructure will need to maintain, grow, or gain efficiency. We can look at the two Windows Server MCITP credentials in the same way.
- Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator – Operations focused, responsible for today, tomorrow, and next week
- Windows Server 2008, Enterprise Administrator – Engineering focused, responsible for next month, next year and beyond
- Windows 7, Enterprise Desktop Support Technician – Operations focused, responsible for today, tomorrow, and next week
- Windows 7, Enterprise Desktop Administrator – Engineering focused, responsible for next month, next year and beyond
Microsoft has also recently launched a Virtualization Administrator MCITP certification. This MCITP certification validates the ability to specify, design and implement Server and Desktop Virtualization solutions.
What if I don't need Certification?
Sometimes you need to understand or implement a particular technology, and require the knowledge rather than the certification. The Training Foundry also provides courses which are not specifically geared to one of the Microsoft Certification exams, but are extremely useful for understanding the technologies involved. These courses may also be useful for delegates who wish to take the certification exams and are willing to undertake some self-study to cover the exam topics not included in the courses.
